About and founder notes

Ten founder note sections explaining why Ascend studies video frames while other AIs pull web text.

01The letter

A note from the team

To everyone still guessing what to post,

We started Ascend because we got tired of AI scripts that read like blog posts. Every writing tool we tried had been trained on articles, captions, and comment threads. Not one of them had ever seen a reel.

Here is what those tools miss: virality does not live in text. It lives in frames, pacing, and the first second of a hook. Nobody ever stopped scrolling for a caption.

So we built a library that watches. It studies the reels that break out in each niche, scene by scene and cut by cut, and every recommendation it makes traces back to a real reel with real numbers attached.

The shortest way we know to say it: Ascend watches and studies viral videos all day so you do not have to.

Make the video. We will bring the receipts.

Co-founder, Ascend

  • Six years cutting short form for brands before writing a line of product code
  • Watched roughly 400 reels a day as an agency editor
  • Hand annotated the first 500 reels in the Ascend library

Founder note

I did not learn hooks from an article. I learned them at 2x speed.

Before Ascend, my job was watching. Agencies paid me to sit in an edit bay, scrub through hundreds of reels, and figure out why the loud ones worked. The answers were never in the caption. They were in frame one, the second cut, the beat where the text overlay landed.

When AI writing tools arrived, I tried all of them. The scripts read like blog posts because that is what they were made of. The models had read the internet. They had never watched anything.

Ascend is the tool I wanted in that edit bay: a library that watches all day, remembers everything, and can point at the exact reel behind every suggestion it makes.

What we believe

Three beliefs we will not trade away

01

Virality lives in frames, not captions.

A scroll is won or lost in the first second of footage, before a single word is read. So the first thing Ascend studies in any reel is the hook frame.

02

Every recommendation needs a receipt.

If we cannot show you the source reel, its views, and its hook rate, we do not make the suggestion. Advice without evidence is just a guess with confidence.

03

Software should do the watching.

Growing an account should not require scrolling eight hours a day. The library watches, pauses, and takes the notes. You make the video.

04Story timeline

How we got here

From a frustrated edit bay to a library that never stops watching

  1. 2023

    The frustration

We were producing short form for brands, and every AI script we generated read like a blog post with a hook stapled to the front. The models had read the internet. They had never watched a reel.

  2. 2024

    The prototype

We taught a model to watch instead. The first version studied 500 reels we annotated by hand: hook frames, cuts, pacing, and the exact second viewers left.

  3. 2025

    The library

The prototype became an always-on library. It now studies breakout reels across every niche we track and logs how each one moved through the algorithm.

  4. Today

    The product

Every script, idea, and diagnosis in Ascend traces back to a real reel in that library. When it cannot cite a source, it stays quiet. That rule is the company.

05Two pipelines

Text in, text out

Two ways to teach an AI about reels

Most tools learn video from what people write about it. We decided that was the wrong training data, and built the other pipeline.

Most AI writers

Trained on text about videos

Blog posts and articleswhat people wrote
Scraped captions and commentswhat people typed
Word patternswhat sounds right
A script that reads like a blog post
  • Never sees pacing, cuts, or hook frames
  • Cannot say why any specific reel worked
  • No source to check
Ascend

Trained on the videos themselves

Viral reels in your nichewatched, not scraped
Frames, pacing, hooksstudied scene by scene
Retention and distribution datawhere reach came from
A script remixed to your account
  • Watches every scene and cut
  • Cites the source reel with metrics
  • Adapts the wording to your voice and niche

“Ascend watches and studies viral videos all day so you do not have to.”

It started as a description of our own week and became the product spec. Every feature has to pass the same test: does it replace a scroll session with an answer you can trace to a real reel?

Why we watch

Most AIs get their info from the internet. We get our info from viral videos

That sentence is the whole company. Text can tell you what people say about a topic. Only video can show you what makes someone stop, watch to the end, and follow.

Choosing video meant building everything ourselves: the watching, the scene breakdowns, the retention curves, the distribution tracking. It was slower and more expensive than scraping text. It also works.

What watching means

One reel, studied the way Ascend studies everything

This is a single entry from the library. Every reel we index gets the same treatment: hook frames tagged, retention read per scene, distribution tracked stage by stage.

  1. Frames, not captions

The model tags what is on screen during the hook second: the face, the claim, the text overlay, the motion. That is where the scroll is won, so it gets studied first.

  2. Seconds, not summaries

Retention is read cut by cut. Ascend logs the exact moment viewers leave and compares the curve against the niche median.

  3. Stages, not vibes

Each reel is followed through the distribution stages, followers to Explore, so the library learns where reach stalls and what pushed this one through.

09Operating principles

Operating principles

Four rules, applied to every reel and every answer

Rule 01

Watch the video

Every reel in the library is studied frame by frame: hook, cuts, pacing, on-screen text. Reading about a video is not the same as watching it.

Rule 02

Trace every claim

No advice without a receipt. Each suggestion links back to the source reel with its views, hook rate, and distribution path attached.

Rule 03

Remix, never copy

You do not get someone else's script. Ascend rebuilds the structure that worked and rewrites it in your voice, for your account and your niche.

Rule 04

Diagnose honestly

When your reach stalls, we show the stage where it stuck and the most likely reason, even when the reason is the video itself.

10Open answers

Asked and answered

Three questions we hear every week

Short questions, honest answers, nothing folded away.

Question 01

What makes you better at writing scripts?

Other AIs read the internet, I actually watch the videos.

That is Ascend's own answer when you ask it directly, and it is literal. The model is grounded in a library of watched reels, not scraped articles, so its scripts inherit pacing and hooks instead of blog structure.

Question 02

Is this just trend chasing with extra steps?

No. Trends are the surface.

The library studies why a format worked: the hook mechanic, the retention shape, the distribution path. Those patterns outlive any single trend, which is why Ascend can transfer a working concept from an adjacent niche into yours.

Question 03

Why should I trust a recommendation I did not research myself?

Because you can check every one.

Each script and idea cites the reel it was remixed from, with views, hook rate, and watch time attached. And when the diagnostic says your reach stalled with non-followers, it shows you the realtime data it read to get there.
